The Glass Hearing Trumpet

‘The Glass Hearing Trumpet ‘ in Salford Acoustic Laboratory’s Anechoic chamber was one of three site-specific installations presented to an audience of 120 in groups of 10 throughout the day of May 3rd produced by Sound From the Other City.
Audiences arrived via a turquoise lit narrow corridor. The walls were affixed with small engraved wooded panels, each showing descriptions of people’s tinnitus collected via an ethically approved survey.
Outside the anechoic chamber, a seemingly inert speaker which rattled to life as the heavy chamber door rolled open and audience members walked into the darkened space across the suspended metal mesh to which a Geofon (vibration based contact microphone was connected.
Prior to entering the chamber, plywood ‘scores’ were handed out instructing attendees to listen for the sound description inscribed on the plaque. After about 1.5mins of quiet, allowing the ears to attuned to the space the chamber an assistant walked from person to person, illuminating each score.
